Yes, and they're treated differently from wall-to-wall carpet. Wool, silk and hand-knotted rugs need pH-controlled cleaning and careful moisture control, because too much water or the wrong chemistry can cause dye bleed or cellulosic browning that shows up as tan haze along the edges after drying. We test dyes in an inconspicuous spot before anything else, and if a rug is too fragile or too valuable to clean safely in place, we'll say so rather than take the risk. If we can't be there quickly, we'll tell you over the phone how to blot it and what not to do: no scrubbing, no hot water, no drugstore stain removers on natural fiber. Discretion during an event is standard for us. We can work around guests or come back the next morning if that's better.

What goes wrong most often in homes like ours?

A few things repeat. Entry areas take a beating from gardeners and household staff coming in and out all day, and with low-density lots and mature landscaping around here, pollen and irrigation soil get tracked in constantly and grind down into the fiber. Stair runs in the 1920s–40s houses wear at the nose of each tread. And the most common damage we see is previous over-wetting on a wool or silk rug, which shows as browning or migrated dye once it dried. Regular vacuuming and getting soil out before it abrades the pile prevents most of it.
