If a rug pad has been down for decades and left a mark on the finish, cleaning won't remove that. It's a finish issue, not a soil issue, and we'll say so rather than keep scrubbing.

The cut pile in our postwar ranch has flat, gray tracks down the hallway. Will cleaning fix it?

Soil will come out, and that usually recovers most of the gray. What cleaning can't undo is fiber that's been crushed and abraded flat over years of traffic in the same three-foot path. Those older cut piles wear at the tips, and worn tips scatter light differently no matter how clean they are. We'll be straight with you before we start on whether we're looking at soil, wear, or both, so you're not expecting a hallway that looks like the closet.

How fast can you get out here, and do you do same-day?
